BIU Service

As part of RBS’ corporate policy to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by some 5% annually, BIU were engaged to carry out energy surveys on the 500 largest properties to determine how, when and where the energy was being consumed and identify opportunities for energy reduction. Each site required an analysis of the energy use in relation to operational processes and a quantification of the investment needed to realise potential energy savings.

What the client said

“BIU’s site surveys have identified over £4.0m of potential energy savings, many of which can be implemented through no-cost or low-cost measures and the consequential saving in carbon emissions is of the order of 25,000 tonnes per annum. BIU have proved invaluable in assisting RBS in identifying and quantifying energy saving opportunities at sites within our portfolio thanks to their knowledgeable and professional approach when carrying out energy surveys and analysing the results”. What the client said

Ian Kellett, Finance Director, Pets at Home: “Since signing up to BIU’s procurement service, we have not only achieved substantial savings, we have also achieved budget certainty in a financial climate where nothing is certain.........We find BIU’s approach to flexible procurement provides control, particularly the communication regarding their live market price tracking. This is of great importance as internal resources cannot spend all their time looking at energy trading screens therefore knowing BIU’s experts are watching offers a great deal of reassurance.”

Results

With 245 locations across the UK, spending £4.1 million per annum on electricity and £790k per annum on gas, Pets at Home appointed BIU in 2009 to maximise control over its expenditure. In the first year, BIU developed a fixed procurement strategy which enabled BIU to “lock in” prices by purchasing in line with market price fluctuations. This resulted in a saving of £480k against the previous year’s fixed price contract. BIU has since developed a flexible procurement model for both electricity and gas which has resulted in circa £700k savings to-date.
