Over the next two years, the government looks set to introduce ESOS. The Scheme is a compulsory programme of regular energy audits for ‘large enterprises’ that must be undertaken by 5th December 2015.
The key requirement under ESOS can be found in Article 8 of the directive which states that EU member states must introduce independent and cost-effective energy audits for all ‘large enterprises’.
‘Large enterprises’ are defined as any non-small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) having:
- 250 employee of more; and
- an annual turnover exceeding €50 million or an annual balance sheet total exceeding €43 million.
The Public Sector is not required to participate.
It is believed that in excess of 7,000 businesses will fall into ESOS, but up to 6,000 may already be in the CRC Carbon Reduction Scheme and some dispensation may therefore be introduced.
