Staff leading the example for personal net-zero actions

From changing his search engine to adopting a carbon offsetting fuel scheme, Michael Sjollema, Strategic Account Manager at BiU, is making sure his impact on the environment is helping the country meet net-zero goals as well as taking personal responsibility for his actions.

Firstly, Michael wanted to make a positive impact on the environment from his driving so opted to start refuelling with Shell to utilise the Shell Go+ app.

Using the simple app, which is scanned after each refuel, he’s been able to offset the carbon emissions from his travelling, and in just 10 visits to his Shell garage he has carbon offset just over 1156kg.

The app is free to use, and Shell pay to offset the carbon by protecting and replanting forests on his behalf.

“Switching to the Shell Go+ app made me look at all other little things I do that can affect my carbon footprint, so what can switch or habit change with little or no effort to make a difference?”, he commented.

With that seed of thought planted, Michael looked at his daily habits, from changing his search engine to Ecosia – a not for profit search engine that uses the revenue from ads in searches to plant trees where they are needed – to reducing internal emails that could be done in person as Michael remembered reading on the Guardian “if every adult in the UK sent one fewer “thank you” email a day we would save more than 16,433 tonnes of carbon a year – equivalent to 81,152 flights to Madrid or taking 3,334 diesel cars off the road.” So he took action to prevent unnecessary emails.”

Of course, Michael at home is just as carbon-conscious– from using non-finite electricity sources for his home to cycling where possible with his children.

The final big change on his hit-list is his car, a switch to hybrid or fully electric is on his horizon.

We think it’s great our staff are consistently setting the example to each other, being responsible and bold in their decisions to reduce carbon personally and in the workplace. Some simple steps can make a big difference, and as Michael’s favourite quotes from Steve Jobs goes “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do”.
