Only a third of the public would support fracking even if they got cash.
A survey by YouGov published by Friends of the Earth asked more than 1,000 people if they would allow shale exploration near their houses if they were paid up to £10,000.
It follows the government’s consultation on whether or not give cash payments to those who live near fracking sites.
Energy Live News decided to conduct their own survey out and about and received mixed reactions from the industry and the general public.
The YouGov survey found 33% of people asked would allow it while 43% said they “strongly” oppose fracking with 25% “unsure”.
Liz Hutchins, FoE Senior Political Strategist said: “What we do know is that the more people learn about fracking and what it could mean for their health and environment, the more opposed they could be. And it’s clear from this survey that they haven’t been fooled by the government’s latest bribe.”
